![]() In a major win for the environment, the Tasmanian and Federal governments have finally agreed to a joint funding arrangement to save Macquarie Island from environmental devastation by pest animals. WWF-Australia, which campaigned heavily for the immediate implementation of a pest eradication plan on the island, has welcomed the decision. The devastation of the habitat would have resulted in the possible extinction of some of the world's most beautiful seabirds.
Tim Winton is one of Australia's most acclaimed novelists and his books are published worldwide in many languages. In a rare public appearance, published exclusively for Futuremakers, Tim describes poignantly, and with characteristic humour, our connection to the coast and the sea. He talks about the pivotal role of science in guiding government decisions about how we use the marine environment. Tim also reminds us that Australians responded in great numbers to the plight of Ningaloo Reef and outlines his hopes for how the lessons from that successful campaign will inform a new approach to balancing development and conservation for places like the magnificent Kimberley. » Read 'Tim Winton talks about our connection to the coast and the sea' |
